The AI football match from the initial video was based on a retro 2D football game from 1996/1997. So how might more recent implementations of AI in terms of playing football look like, and where are we heading to?
Let's imagine robots... I mean autonomous machines, not individually controlled by humans. Even ignoring the control scheme for a moment... how convincing do robots play football? This is from a video from 2012.
I have the highest respect for creators of great technology, but what can be said about the pacing of this game? Can you imagine watching a whole football game like that, for, say... 90 minutes or 120 minutes + penalties?
Let's skip ahead another 10 years to the year 2022 to see how big the improvements may be.

I love how it continues stomping after shooting, oops, walking a goal. That is pure AI excitement exposed.
Now that we've dealt with robots let's go to modern AI-generated football or AI soccer. How does a modern 3D implementation of AI football look & feel like, without the use of motion capturing, completely built, generated and trained from the ground up, for example in comparison to the two soccer games shown before?

The narrator reminded me of some real football games that I've watched. We've probably all seen matches where some players made kind of random movements while avoiding to produce any competent behaviour.
Well, that concludes these modern AI football demonstrations. Brilliant, aren't they?
In terms of football game releases about every year some new titles come out, I could hardly cover all of them. The bar for the graphics detail is being set higher and higher every year, yet I find it amusing that a match of these 2D games manages to entertain me a lot better, despite their simpler graphics. The focus is on the play.
